Pregnancy
- Pregnancy is a physiological process in which a woman’s body undergoes significant changes to nurture and support the development of a new life. It begins with the fertilization of an egg by a sperm, leading to the formation of a zygote. This zygote then undergoes a series of cell divisions as it travels down the fallopian tube and eventually implants itself into the lining of the uterus. The developing organism is referred to as an embryo in the early stages and later as a fetus.
The duration of pregnancy is typically divided into three trimesters, each lasting about three months:
First Trimester (Weeks 1-12):
- Initial signs of pregnancy may include missed menstrual periods, fatigue, nausea (morning sickness), and breast tenderness.
- During this time, major organs and structures of the fetus begin to form.
- The heartbeat can often be detected, and the embryo is referred to as a fetus around the 10th week.
Second Trimester (Weeks 13-26):
- Many women experience a decrease in nausea, and energy levels often increase.
- The fetus grows significantly, and movements may be felt by the mother.
- Organs and systems continue to develop, and the baby’s sex can often be identified during this period.
Third Trimester (Weeks 27-40):
- The fetus continues to grow, gaining weight and developing more fully.
- The mother may experience increased discomfort as the baby’s size puts pressure on organs and tissues.
- The baby’s lungs and other organs mature in preparation for birth.
Pregnancy is monitored through regular prenatal check-ups with healthcare providers, including physical examinations, ultrasound scans, and various tests to ensure the well-being of both the mother and the developing baby. Toward the end of the third trimester, the woman goes into labor, and the baby is born through the process of childbirth.
Pregnancy is a unique and transformative experience for women, marked by physical, emotional, and hormonal changes. It is crucial for expectant mothers to receive appropriate medical care and support throughout this journey to ensure a healthy pregnancy and delivery.
